Do you have the guts to do an Islamic version? The South Park creators were willing to go there, even if their producers were not. That is why they are the most TRULY unbiased satirists in the world: they poke at everything, will roast ANYONE. Take the "atheist alien space otters", for example. You have the advantage of not having cowardly producers holding you back, so will you do it? Really, all you would have to do is remove Jesus and the triangle, and make the devil into a genie, perhaps add an Islamic, multi colored angle. Understand, I do not like to see EITHER of these sorts of things, but I APPRECIATE it when a satirist portrays both as proof he is not prejudiced or cowardly. If you could also poke fun of misotheism as South Park did with tye afore mentioned otters, then I could appreciate you as much as I do them.

I'm an atheist and find this funny (and well drawn!) :). That being said, it sickens me that we live in a world where doing a caricature like this with a certain pedophile "prophet" of a certain "religion of peace" would result in getting death threats.

BAN ISLAM.

Dude, you don't sound atheist... you just sound like an extremely jaded ex-Muslim. If you weren't so small minded you'd be decrying ALL organized religion, not just Islam.

I'm not an ex-Muslim, but Islam takes the cake. It is THE worst religion out there. The most backwards, primitive, barbaric, ruthlessly prejudiced, bigoted, racist, misogynistic, violent religion of them all. While all religion is ridiculous, not all religions in the modern secular forms are actual threats to life on this planet. In that effect, Islam is the worst of the lot and I feel compelled to attack it as much as I can :)

True. Though I did add the qualifier "organized". Everyone, regardless of religious choice, should have a problem with that. Religion should be a personal project and it doesn't seem right that some imam, pope or guru tells large masses of people how to go about their lives. Organized religion is at best useless, and at worst a corruptor and enslaver of rational minds. It's true that I'm an atheist but I fluctuated between that and being a pantheist, and even monotheistic. But there's no good way to rationalize large religious institutions. Just my ultimately meaningless two cents. :)

"Disorganized religion" has all the sustainability and potential legacy of a sandcastle in a hurricane. It's not progressive, and progress, properly understood (a rare gem indeed! ), means to add good to the whole, prune away what does not work, all while maintaining the core base, the root ideals and ideas that started the Thing in question. If you cannot do all that indefinitely, then you do not have a progress. Mostly we have chaos masquerading as progress, or a stubborn conservatism that is stagnant and stunted. Progress, as I understand it, is the ideal organizing principle for three human habits: strictly physical science, practical politics, and religion, all together SHOULD, ideally, work together to help us define the Universe, and each other, our purpose and reason for living. Failure to do all of that is less then progressive, and to do ANY of it requires organization. Beliefs have no meaning without a legacy, and there is no legacy without passing it on to others, and passing ANYTHING on requires organization. To keep one's beliefs to oneself in the name of not "imposing" upon another is to forever condemn all future generations to re-invent the wheel, even if it is the wheel of karma, or some other theory of metaphysics. You might as well expect a baby to pick up language as his or her mood dictates, without prompting or discipline from parents.

Your response was really convoluted and I almost gave up on deciphering it but am glad I didn't. If I understood correctly, you are saying, 1., that progress through chaos is impossible. 2., organization and hierarchies are necessary, because the alternative is that every new instance of consciousness will have to undergo the process of progress for themselves (i.e. getting nowhere).

I understand your thought process but you have a red herring and a false dichotomy on your hands...

1. Personalized religion does not equate to chaos, but allows people to choose which horse they are going to bet on. Allow me to explain: the questions that religion attempts to answer are based on fuzzy rationale with many variables, as is often the case in moralistic quandaries. Therefore, the number of hypotheses skyrockets - to just test all the claims about "how prayers work" would take thousands - if not millions - of lives. Hence, it is better for religion to be split so that the amount of time it takes to come up with the "best religion" would be significantly reduced. Personally, I think the best religion hinges on being atheist, and my life will be the "test" of that hypothesis. 1000 doctors working on different cures simultaneously are more likely to find one than a 1000 doctors doing precisely the same test on one cure at a time. Also, I'm not sure why I just wrote all that because I could have countered in two words: Biological Evolution.

2. Your assertion that legacy is dependent on organization is wrong. Legacy is dependent on the recording of information. Top-down organization, which is what my original comment referred to, is unnecessary; definitely so when compared to emergent patterns. That said, the amount of time it takes to learn about something and apply it can be and usually are disproportionate (fours years of university vs. four decades of professional life, for example). I'm not saying people should not create rules for themselves but those rules need not come from the Vatican or even their own parents. Hence, personal religion is better solution than organized religion. Organized, theistic religion is the worst - as it is actively eliminating the fruits of progress and is too rigid to change.

I guess it should be a personal choice, and it's becoming one.  We already have a bunch of people telling us to go about our lives.

Well, the new pope is doing a pretty good job.  He's better than the last one.

I agree with DTfox
I hate to argue but you're wrong in this fact
I would and have been fine when people post comedy pieces about Wicca, my own belief
I have never seen an outcry on any other religious piece, because most people are open minded enough to laugh at a joke. And I'm not saying you're not, but you kind of have a victim complex going on.
I have seen plenty of rage on offensive pieces to christian beliefs. Plenty.

in this case i feel theres a fine line between a joke and an obvious attempt to demean someone elses way of life and heritage.
i probably do have a victim complex but can you blame me? its tiring to continuously make an effort to be open to the beliefs of people who treat your beliefs with no respect at all. i dont know to what extent your able to relate to that and i apologise if i seem whiny and over-protective and if ive offended anybody. my religion is very close to my heart

Generally most other religions have more justification for a victim complex than Christianity does. That's not to say there isn't some Christian victimizing/persecution etc. There definitely is. Thing is, is that it tends to get way overdramatized because for the most part, Christians have gone with hardly any persecution at all for so long, they've been are our the dominant religion, have gotten special treatment in laws for a long time now. Now that many of the other groups are standing up and want equal say or want Christian idealogical control out of government (basically equal treatment one way or another), many Christians take this as a jump to persecution.

Whereas many (by no means not all), Christians have been and continue to persecute and dismiss the needs and ideas of other religions, especially those of the "Pagan" variety (I don't like that term, but it most easily communicates what I'm talking about). Christians have been privileged for a long time comparatively speaking, and people don't like seeing that change.

As to the art, it is a humorous interpretation, the intent here is not to degrade or demean. I wouldn't be offended at all if someone made a humorous piece of Lugh playing catch with his "Grandpa" (Balor) and had him putting out Balor's eye with the spear after saying "Catch Grandpa!" and Balor missing. When as the actual story goes is an epic battle is occurring and as Balor is about to unleash his deadly eye upon the forces of the Tuatha de Danann, Lugh hurls his spear and takes out his evil eye, killing him and winning the day.

Hey guys, I’m just writing to apologise for my comments. I wasn’t in a good or healthy place when I wrote it and although the image made me angry I shouldn’t have acted on it but instead just moved on. I still don’t like the image (although the artist is obviously talented) and I know I sound like a wacko and a troll but hopefully people can forgive me for that

The thing with art is that you have freedom to do whatever you want - Freedom of Interpretation and Expression.
I see it as more of an 'interpretation' than a 'joke' personally. Who's to say the artist him/herself isn't a christian? Did you ask? I doubt it.

To think Christianity is the only belief that gets made fun of as well is kind of ignorant - Chances are if it exists, it's probably been ridiculed somewhere.
I definitely agree - You're definitely displaying symptoms of a victim complex that is beyond unnecessary.

I'm sure the only reason you're bothered by it anyway is because it happens to be your beliefs - if it was anyone else, I'm sure you wouldn't care. What makes your beliefs special?

Additionally: I don't think you should be complaining about people 'disrespecting' your beliefs (in such a melodramatic/over-sensitive manner anyway),
when people use the same beliefs to JUSTIFY treating people of other religions, homosexuals, etc, etc, with absolute disrespect - far worse than this picture has done to you, or your belief.

All in all - if you look at it from the open-minded view of an artist, and not the close-minded view of an overprotective believer - You might see more than a "stab" at your beliefs.
I feel like before you respond - I should mention I don't judge any religion by the way - you being close-minded about the piece has nothing to do with you being religious,
I would probably have worded quite a similar reply on a piece to an atheist reacting the way you did to a stab at atheism from a religious stand point.

Cheers, and my apologies if I offended you (not my intention) - but I feel like you're making a huge scene calling this mockery when it's just a painting.

People get upset by trivial things too easily...I've been looking very intense to this painting,
and honestly, I couldn't find out how it would be offending. Maybe the comic setting takes away
the profanity of your faith away for just a second? who knows.. I don't see how that can possibly be bad :)

Perhaps - but comic styling does't necessarily mean parody either (despite common belief) -
I've seen many serious pieces in comic, cartoon, and even Chibi style. x'D It's just the style - not the message.

I'm not saying you think that way either btw - Just addressing your mention of it. x'D I wholesomely agree!
